Fiji’s Path to Healing: The Call for Truth and Reconciliation

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasized the importance of the truth and reconciliation process in promoting unity within Fiji. He welcomed the ongoing public consultations regarding the framework for the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (FTRC), asserting that it is a necessary step for the nation.

“The results from the current consultation process will play a crucial role in shaping the FTRC,” Rabuka stated. He addressed concerns raised in media regarding the potential impact of the immunity provisions in the 2013 Constitution on the FTRC’s work, clarifying that such implications would not hinder the consultation efforts.

“If immunity issues arise during these discussions and their relationship with the 2013 Constitution become apparent, they will be included in the Constitutional Review process,” he explained.

Rabuka highlighted the participation of former politicians, community leaders, religious representatives, NGO members, and private citizens at recent public consultations in Labasa, Nausori, Lautoka, and Suva. This turnout underscores the need for open dialogues about Fiji’s historical political challenges.

“I appreciate everyone who attended these public forums and noted the sincere discussions that took place,” he added. The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to Hon Sashi Kiran and her supporting Assistant Ministers for their efforts in advancing this crucial initiative.
