Fiji’s Path to Healing: PM Rabuka Advocates for Reconciliation

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has stated that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, including the pardons of George Speight and Shane Stevens, were conducted in accordance with established procedures and without any outside influence.

Rabuka emphasized that these actions should be seen as part of Fiji’s continuous journey towards reconciliation and healing, noting that the nation’s path to unity and progress requires reflection on its history and collective efforts to forge a better future.

He remarked, “Those of us who contributed to our nation’s instability must take responsibility for the delays in major development progress.”

The Prime Minister described the pardons as a positive opportunity for those who have completed their prison sentences, saying, “Once released, they have paid their dues and can contribute to society again.”

He further encouraged embracing forgiveness, truth, and reconciliation as a means to collectively advance and foster a stronger, united Fiji. Rabuka called on all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives aimed at truth and reconciliation, which he considers essential for the nation’s growth and prosperity.
