The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has successfully wrapped up its eight-month-long Reconciliation and Restoration Program, designed to promote national healing and reconciliation. Launched in March, this initiative has provided RFMF personnel with an opportunity for reflection and to seek forgiveness from the families impacted by the May 2000 coup.
The culmination of this program was marked by a heartfelt ceremony yesterday, which included a wreath-laying tribute for the individuals who lost their lives during those turbulent times nearly 24 years ago. This was followed by a church service and a traditional “matanigasau” presentation offered to the families of eight soldiers who perished during the 2000 mutiny, many of whom were associated with the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit.
Among the dignitaries present was His Excellency President Ratu Williame Katonivere, and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka took a leading role in promoting forgiveness. He spoke candidly about the lingering pain that the past events have caused families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
This initiative marks a significant step towards healing and unity in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and understanding in overcoming past grievances. It inspires hope for a more unified future, illustrating that collective efforts towards reconciliation can pave the way for a stronger society.
In summary, the RFMF’s Reconciliation and Restoration Program represents a commendable commitment to healing past wounds and fostering a spirit of togetherness within Fiji, signaling a hopeful path forward.
