Fiji’s Path to Harmony: Progress in Tourism and Reconciliation

Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka has highlighted significant advancements in both the economic and social realms of Fiji. He noted that in June, the Cabinet sanctioned the Counter Narcotics Strategy for 2023–2028, followed by the approval of the National HIV Surge Strategy for 2024–2027 this month.

Mr. Gavoka emphasized the increased investment in law enforcement, which includes the Fiji Police Force Reset program and initiatives to enhance the independence of the judiciary and related bodies.

As Fiji prepares to celebrate World Tourism Day, Mr. Gavoka mentioned that this year’s theme is ‘Tourism and peace’, which aligns with the efforts underway to foster harmony and address historical political injustices within the nation.

He also remarked on the progress of the truth and reconciliation process, acknowledging the challenges involved. However, he asserted that honest dialogue is essential for Fiji to rectify past injustices and recognize the rights and aspirations of all its citizens.

Mr. Gavoka concluded by affirming that through this process, Fiji can continue evolving into a safer, more harmonious society. He echoed the Prime Minister’s reassurance to all communities that they have no cause for concern. He proclaimed that true democracy is reinstated in Fiji, allowing its citizens to feel free, happy, and secure.
