Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica has reinforced the Fijian government’s dedication to empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives by promoting innovative and sustainable business methods. During the Global Recycling Day celebrations, he highlighted that transforming waste into economic opportunities is essential for both environmental protection and economic advancement.
Mr. Kamikamica pointed out the significance of enhancing the ease of doing business in Fiji by simplifying regulatory frameworks to encourage more entrepreneurs to adopt sustainable and green practices. “Sustainability and economic development are not mutually exclusive; they must go hand in hand,” he emphasized, urging enterprises to incorporate sustainable waste management into their operations.
In his speech, he called for stronger recycling initiatives and invited municipal councils to partner with private sectors and communities, stressing that collective effort is necessary. He also mentioned the value of integrating environmental education into curricula at educational institutions, which will empower citizens to actively participate in reducing waste and enhancing recycling efforts.
His comments align with previous discussions regarding the need for improved waste management in Fiji, particularly with the recently launched “I Recycle” initiative at Churchill Park. This program has positioned Fiji as a frontrunner in comprehensive waste management strategies in the region, a development praised by Kamikamica.
The current government initiatives are not only focused on increasing recycling rates but also on cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility. Other officials, including Amitesh Deo from the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji, echo the importance of linking sustainable practices to the country’s economic future, especially in tourism.
Through collaborative efforts, Fiji is taking steps towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. These practices promise benefits for both present and future generations, safeguarding the natural environment crucial for tourism and overall community well-being. As the nation anticipates Global Recycling Day 2025, there is optimism for significant progress in environmental awareness among the Fijian people, paving the way for a more eco-conscious society.
