The Cabinet has decided to make changes to the 2002 Passport Act, which will enable the issuance of Official Passports to eligible senior officials for their official duties, but only during the time they hold their appointments.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka revealed this development, noting that the Official Passport is one of four types of passports managed by the Fiji Immigration Department. This particular passport has previously been restricted to members of the disciplined forces undertaking peacekeeping missions.
Besides the Official Passport, the three other categories include the Ordinary Passport, the Diplomatic Passport, and the Emergency Passport. The Prime Minister indicated that the proposed amendments to the Passport Act will be presented for further consideration by the Cabinet.
This move seems to enhance the operational capabilities of senior officials, allowing them to conduct official business more efficiently and effectively. By streamlining the passport process for these individuals, the government demonstrates a commitment to supporting its leaders in their roles while maintaining security and proper protocol.
Overall, the amendment can be viewed as a positive step towards modernizing the governmental processes related to international travel for official duties.
