The Pacific Animal Shelter and Hospital (PASH) in Nadi, Fiji, is embarking on an ambitious expansion plan aimed at enhancing its services for animals and their owners. The new developments include a specialized boarding facility for dogs and cats, providing pet owners with reliable care options while they travel. Trustee Renita Reddy emphasized the importance of a new doggy daycare center that will offer a safe space for socialization and exercise.
Achieving this vision requires substantial funding, with PASH targeting to raise $100,000 from the community. Reddy commented, “Each donation helps us increase our capacity to care for Fiji’s animals while providing essential services to local pet owners and tourists.”
Currently, PASH operates a veterinary clinic that supports its rescue and desexing efforts financially. The shelter is dedicated to enhancing animal welfare in Fiji through various services including medical care, rehabilitation, and rehoming programs.
To initiate its fundraising efforts, PASH recently hosted its second annual golf fundraiser at The Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, successfully raising $30,000. Reddy expressed appreciation for the generous sponsors and supporters, stating that these funds will directly contribute to the expansion initiative and bolster free community desexing programs.
The need for such expansion is highlighted by the troubling estimate of around 200,000 stray animals in Fiji, largely due to uncontrolled breeding. Reddy emphasized that addressing this overpopulation through spaying and neutering is a crucial priority for PASH. She noted, “By preventing unwanted litters, we can reduce the stray population and alleviate the suffering of these animals.”
This call for support resonates emotionally with both locals and tourists, many of whom express concern about the plight of stray animals during their visits to Fiji. Reddy urged the community to contribute, underscoring the significant impact that even small donations can have on the lives of animals in need.
