Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. He secured his position this morning with a total of 34 votes. The nomination was put forward by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and supported by Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.
The Opposition Leader, Inia Seruiratu, nominated former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, whose candidacy received backing from stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj. However, Nadalo garnered only 15 votes. Justice Jitoko succeeds Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who took on the role of President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.
This transition ushers in a new chapter for Fiji’s legislative leadership, and Justice Jitoko’s experience as a retired judge may provide a unique perspective in addressing parliamentary matters. His election reflects a decisive mandate and the confidence of the members in his ability to lead the legislative body effectively.
Positive Note: The election of Justice Jitoko symbolizes a commitment to stable governance and could pave the way for enhanced dialogue in Parliament, fostering cooperation across party lines.
