Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. In a vote held this morning, he secured 34 votes. His nomination was put forward by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and supported by Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.
In contrast, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu nominated former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, who received 15 votes after being seconded by stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj.
Justice Jitoko succeeds Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who was appointed President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.
This election marks a significant shift in Fiji’s parliamentary leadership, with Justice Jitoko bringing his legal expertise and experience to the role of Speaker. His appointment could foster improved dialogue and collaboration between the government and opposition during these pivotal times for the nation.
