Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. This decision was made during a session this morning, where he secured 34 votes in favor of his nomination. The proposal for his appointment was put forward by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and supported by Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.

In contrast, the Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu put forward the nomination of former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, which received backing from stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj. However, Nadalo garnered only 15 votes.

Justice Jitoko takes over the role from Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who recently assumed the position of President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.

The election of Justice Jitoko marks a notable transition in Fiji’s political landscape, showcasing a collaborative effort across party lines during the nomination process. His extensive experience as a judge positions him well to guide parliamentary proceedings effectively. This new leadership role reflects a commitment to ensuring a balance of perspectives within the country’s legislative framework, offering a hopeful glimpse into a collaborative future for Fiji’s governance.

In summary, the election of Justice Jitoko as Speaker signifies a crucial new chapter for Fiji’s Parliament, with the potential for enhanced dialogue and unity in addressing issues facing the nation.
