Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. This significant decision came during a session today, where he secured 34 out of 49 votes. His nomination was put forward by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and supported by Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.

Justice Jitoko faced opposition from former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, who was nominated by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu and seconded by stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj. Nadalo garnered 15 votes, but it was not enough for him to claim the position.

Justice Jitoko succeeds Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who recently took office as the President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.

The election of Justice Jitoko signifies a new chapter for Fiji’s Parliament, and his extensive legal experience may bring valuable insights to the legislative process. As the nation progresses, this leadership transition is a hopeful sign for the continued development and governance of Fiji.
