Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. This announcement came after a successful vote held this morning, where Justice Jitoko secured 34 votes in his favor. His nomination was put forth by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and endorsed by Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.

In contrast, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu nominated former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, whose candidacy received backing from stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj. Nadalo garnered 15 votes in the election.

Justice Jitoko takes over the role from Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who recently became the President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.

This leadership change marks a significant moment for Fiji’s legislative body, as it seeks to navigate through current challenges and aims for progress under new stewardship. Justice Jitoko’s extensive background in law and justice positions him well to preside over Parliament, fostering a sense of hope for a collaborative and productive legislative session.
