Members of Parliament in Fiji have made it clear that there is no tolerance for gender-based violence in the nation. Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya emphasized the significant measures taken by the government to combat this pressing issue, pointing out that various ministers have actively engaged in the initiative.

Despite the progress, Mr. Koya highlighted the necessity for more grassroots education to facilitate enduring change. He stated, “Fiji has done so much in this area, with Parliament actively championing the cause. There is absolutely no room for gender-based violence in Fiji or anywhere in the world.”

He stressed the need to instill values of respect and non-violence within the school curriculum, suggesting that such teachings are essential for educating future generations on the unacceptability of violence.

Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu supported these views and remarked on the involvement of the Great Council of Chiefs in tackling gender-based violence. He conveyed that the council had been informed about the national action plan and recognized the need for education surrounding this issue in both village settings and the iTaukei community.

“It’s now mandated under the GCC to incorporate education about gender-based violence against women and children,” Mr. Vasu noted, adding that Fiji’s initiatives are setting a benchmark in the Pacific region.

“There is still work to be done, but we are taking this seriously and observing the outcomes as we compare Fiji’s efforts to those of other Pacific Islands and beyond. We are fully committed to supporting ongoing programs,” he affirmed.

Fiji is paving the way with its commitment to combat gender-based violence, showcasing a collaborative effort among government leaders and community organizations.

This commitment signals hope for a safer future, where respect and non-violence are foundational values taught in schools, leading to a more peaceful society.
