Fiji’s President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, will officially open the new session of Parliament today as part of the 2025-2026 Sitting Calendar. In this inaugural address, he is expected to present the government’s legislative agenda for the year ahead.
Having been appointed last October, Ratu Naiqama received widespread support during a roll call vote, securing 37 votes against 16 for his competitor, Ratu Meli Tora. As the head of state, he will outline several significant plans, including proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution and key electoral laws, as well as the review of critical legislative acts such as the Public Health Act of 1935.
In addition to these proposals, the Coalition Government has approved a comprehensive Work Programme following a recent Cabinet meeting, which encompasses a variety of important laws. Among them are governance laws, migration laws, electoral laws, and regulations pertaining to police, security, human trafficking, cyber-security, and the commercial use of marine areas.
This opening session, scheduled to commence at 10 am, marks the beginning of what promises to be a proactive year in governance, with an emphasis on transparency and collaboration between lawmakers and the public. The proposed legislative measures aim to address pressing socio-economic issues and improve engagement with Fiji’s citizens.
The establishment of an efficient parliamentary calendar reflects optimism and initiative for meaningful dialogue, indicating a positive path forward for governance in Fiji. Through these efforts, there is potential for enhancing the democratic process and fostering a participatory environment that ultimately benefits all Fijians.
