A delegation from the Fijian Parliament has arrived in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to participate in the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly. Speaker Filimone Jitoko is leading the delegation and chaired the plenary session attended by representatives from national parliaments worldwide.

During the assembly, discussions will revolve around significant topics, particularly focused on parliamentary roles in global peace initiatives. One of the key subjects will be the adoption of resolutions on a two-state solution for Palestine, emphasizing the importance of international dialogue and cooperation. Additionally, a Standing Committee on Sustainable Development will examine strategies to alleviate the lasting effects of conflicts on sustainable development goals.

The overarching theme for this year’s assembly is “Parliamentary action for social development and justice.” This reflects a commitment to fostering social inclusion, promoting gender equality, and utilizing technology in governance. Speaker Jitoko, during a previous assembly, emphasized Fiji’s dedication to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting legislative measures aimed at child protection and family welfare.

These initiatives indicate Fiji’s proactive approach towards inclusive governance and active engagement in international fora, fostering hope for global cooperation and the betterment of societal welfare. With the ongoing assembly, there is optimism that shared insights will lead to effective legislative frameworks that promote peace and support sustainable development in the region.
