The Fijian Parliament has successfully passed the national budget for 2025-2026 with a decisive vote of 36 to 12 late last night. A total of 48 Members of Parliament participated in the voting session, held around 10:30 PM. As of this morning, the detailed breakdown of the votes has not yet been made available on the Parliament’s official website.

Speaker of Parliament, Filimone Jitoko, commended the Minister of Finance, Prof. Biman Prasad, on the successful adoption of the budget. He noted that the deliberative process is essential for transparency, accountability, and effective national planning, thanking all members for their valuable contributions. Jitoko expressed further congratulations to Prof. Prasad for his efforts in steering the budget through Parliament.

In addition, the Parliament will reconvene today to discuss and potentially pass several bills that accompany the newly adopted budget, indicating a busy agenda ahead as lawmakers work towards implementing the provisions outlined in the financial plan.

Previously, similar discussions around budgets showcased significant parliamentary engagement, reflecting the government’s commitment to open dialogue and inclusiveness in fiscal matters. The 2024-25 budget encountered momentous approval as well, highlighting a trend of increasing collaboration among politicians, reinforcing the importance of accountable governance.

The passage of the budget today also holds optimistic implications for Fiji’s development, with previous budgets focusing on critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. Enhanced community engagement, a principal theme in recent fiscal strategies, signals efforts to ensure that the government’s financial decisions align closely with the public’s needs and aspirations.

Overall, the new budget’s adoption may usher in a period of progressive change for Fiji, with a promise of improved living standards and enhanced public services, reflecting a hopeful outlook for the nation’s future.
