Fiji’s Parliament is scheduled to elect a new Speaker tomorrow morning at 8 am. This event will take place as a restricted gathering, with live broadcasts available on Walesi and through the Parliament’s Facebook Page.
Deputy Speaker Lenora Qereqeretabua clarified last month that President-Elect Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu would only assume his official responsibilities after he is sworn into office, which is expected to happen after taking the Oath for President. Furthermore, she noted that the position of Speaker will become vacant on 12 November 2024, with provisions in place for the vacancy to be filled thereafter according to Standing Order 17.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his intention to nominate Retired Judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko for the position of Speaker, while Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu is anticipated to announce his own nominee soon. According to Section 77(1)(a), Parliament must elect a Speaker who is not a member of Parliament but is qualified to be an MP, requiring a simple majority for election.
This momentous occasion presents an opportunity for Fiji’s Parliament to move forward with a strong leadership foundation, paving the way for effective governance. The involvement of both the Prime Minister and Opposition leader in the nomination process underscores the collaborative spirit that is essential for the country’s political stability.
