The Ministry of Women, Children & Social Protection has made a significant contribution by donating a bus to support para-athletes in Fiji, easing the financial burden of transportation for training. Fred Fatiaki, the head coach of Team Fiji’s para-athletics, discussed this generous gesture while addressing the challenges the team faces as they prepare for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau.
Fatiaki emphasized the difficulties that athletes, especially those who are wheelchair-bound, have experienced in securing affordable transportation. The new bus allows for much-needed support in transporting para-athletes to and from training sessions without the high costs associated with taxi services.
This donation comes at a pivotal time as Fiji’s para-athletes gear up for the Mini Games, where five para-athletes are set to compete. Fatiaki expressed gratitude towards the ministry, the Fiji Paralympic Committee, and other sports organizations for facilitating this donation, stating that it significantly enhances the preparations for upcoming competitions.
The positive community response mirrors other recent efforts seen across Fiji’s sports landscape where many organizations and bodies, like the Fiji Sports Commission and the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association, have rallied to provide essential support. Such initiatives not only improve immediate logistical challenges but also foster a more inclusive environment for athletes with disabilities, ultimately nurturing their potential on national and international stages.
As Team Fiji prepares for the Pacific Mini Games, the unity and support from various sectors signal hope and optimism for the achievements that lie ahead. With enhanced resources and a collective effort behind them, para-athletes are more empowered to succeed, bringing pride to their nation and inspiring future talent in Fiji’s sporting community.
