The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme is transforming lives and strengthening ties between Fiji and Australia for thousands of Fijian workers. One such individual, Ilikana Seru, a father of six hailing from Nanukuloa village in Ra Province, has significantly improved his family’s living conditions during his three years in Australia under this beneficial program.

Before embarking on this journey, Ilikana and his wife laid out clear aspirations for what they wanted to achieve in Australia. Within just six months, their plans began to materialize, allowing them to purchase a car. In subsequent years, they renovated their village home, adding essential living spaces, and recently celebrated another accomplishment by acquiring a quarter-acre of land in Suva. Ilikana expressed joy at the rapid progress they have made, stating, “Imagine, in four years we were able to achieve all these.”

The benefits extend beyond personal gains. Ilikana and other workers have forged strong relationships in Ararat, the regional Australian town where many PALM participants reside. Their presence has infused the local community with warmth and camaraderie. Ilikana and his colleagues are actively engaged in community efforts, volunteering for tasks such as painting public spaces, participating in clean-up drives, and showcasing Fijian culture through performances. These interactions foster a deeper understanding and friendship that transcends the workplace.

Ilikana sees the PALM scheme as a crucial stage for personal development, especially for younger workers who gain vital life skills such as independence and financial management. He asserts that these experiences will create a more confident and skilled workforce for Fiji, benefiting the nation long after the workers return home.

Currently, over 5,000 Fijians are employed in Australia through the PALM scheme, simultaneously providing for their families and addressing labor shortages in various Australian industries. This initiative reflects the positive and collaborative relationship shared between Fiji and Australia, underpinned by mutual respect and a history of partnership. As Fijian workers earn steady incomes and acquire new skills, Australian communities enjoy the advantage of a dedicated workforce and a vibrant cultural exchange.

Anchored in the Fiji – Australia Vuvale Partnership, the PALM scheme exemplifies the potential of human connections. For Ilikana, the essence of this journey transcends mere employment. It embodies a mission to enhance his family’s future with enduring implications for both communities.
