Fiji’s police have recently made significant strides in combating drug trafficking, particularly through a targeted operation known as Operation Sasamaki. Over the past three months, nearly five tonnes of marijuana have been seized across all five divisions, as reported by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu during a media briefing at Police Headquarters.

Operation Sasamaki has been instrumental in addressing illegal drug activity, with the police reporting a total of 143 drug-related cases during this operation period, marking a 13% increase in incidents compared to previous months. The majority of these cases involved unlawful possession and cultivation of marijuana, reflecting ongoing challenges in the battle against drug exploitation in the region.

Commissioner Tudravu acknowledged that while there has been a slight decrease in marijuana-related arrests, the prevalence of illicit drugs remains a serious concern, particularly with emerging methamphetamine cases also being documented. He emphasized that significant efforts are being made to address these drug trends across Fiji, highlighting the importance of community involvement in the police’s ongoing fight against drug-related crime.

Past results of Operation Sasamaki have indicated successful outcomes, including the apprehension of over 100 individuals and considerable financial seizures tied to drug trafficking operations. This comprehensive approach aims not only to dismantle drug networks but also to restore public trust amid concerns regarding some law enforcement officers’ involvement in drug-related activities.

Tudravu reassured citizens that the police remain vigilant, deploying officers to known hotspots and conducting community policing initiatives to strengthen their efforts against drug cultivation and distribution. The collaborative relationship between law enforcement and community members is essential for fostering safer neighborhoods and successfully tackling drug offenses.

As Fiji continues this critical mission, there is a hopeful outlook for diminished drug-related crime, fostering a healthier and more secure environment for all citizens. The determination of the Fiji Police Force, coupled with community support, reinforces the belief that positive change is achievable in the fight against drugs.
