Fiji’s Online Scammers Target Victims: Police Take Action!

A 22-year-old man has been charged by the Fiji Police Cyber Task Force for allegedly deceiving a victim to obtain financial gain. The incident took place on March 22, 2024, when the accused reportedly took $320 from the victim in exchange for a tent and a table, which he failed to deliver. Following the non-delivery of the items, the victim lodged a complaint at the Nakasi Police Station.

The accused is set to be brought before the Nasinu Magistrates Court today, where he will face charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and Possession of Property Suspected to Be Proceeds of Crime.

In a separate case, a 50-year-old man is also scheduled to appear in court, charged with a similar offense. This individual allegedly secured $190 from a victim as a deposit for a rental car that was advertised on Facebook. After the victim’s efforts to contact him went unanswered, a report was filed at the Lautoka Police Station.

These cases reflect ongoing concerns about online scams and the need for caution when engaging in financial transactions, particularly through digital platforms. The commitment of law enforcement to address such fraudulent activities is encouraging, highlighting efforts to protect consumers and hold wrongdoers accountable. As digital transactions continue to rise, increased vigilance from the public and swift responses from law enforcement are essential in combatting such deceptive practices.
