Fiji’s Online Chess Team has made a remarkable debut in the 2025-2026 Global Chess League, showcasing their skills among a diverse field of 744 players hailing from 65 chess clubs worldwide. The tournament includes participants from countries such as England, Australia, India, Armenia, Pakistan, Libya, Italy, China, Brazil, Iran, Ukraine, and Romania.
Captain Avinesh Nadan leads Team Fiji, which amassed an impressive 92 points over the first three rounds, positioning them 23rd in this highly competitive event. Candidate Master (CM) Goru Arvind noted the challenges of the league’s fast-paced format, where players engage in matches lasting one hour, each comprising five minutes plus a two-second increment per move. This necessitates rapid mental adjustments and sustained concentration.
CM Arvind has been one of Team Fiji’s standout players, scoring a total of 55 points, while captain Nadan contributed 37 points to the team’s success. Their current individual standings place them at 39th and 78th respectively out of the 744 participants.
The team’s strong performance thus far suggests a bright future in the realm of international online chess, underscoring Fiji’s emerging stature within the global chess community. As they continue to compete, their journey offers hope and inspiration for aspiring players in the region.
