The Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, has expressed unwavering commitment to assist all Fijians affected by Tropical Cyclone Rae. In the wake of the cyclone’s impact across parts of the country, the minister stated that the government has been working diligently to implement effective relief and response efforts.
During a recent briefing, Ditoka shared that he has been in close contact with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO) and relevant teams on the ground, emphasizing the coordinated response led by Divisional Commissioners. He affirmed his confidence in their leadership, stating that their primary focus is on providing immediate support to affected communities, without resorting to political grandstanding.
The minister took a stand against comments made by Opposition MP Vijay Nath, who criticized the government’s disaster response, suggesting it was more about political visibility than genuine assistance. Ditoka argued that decency in disaster management requires a focus on support rather than political points, urging constructive collaboration during these challenging times.
Relief efforts have already commenced, with government teams mobilized to assess damage and distribute essential supplies. Recently, three government vessels departed from Suva, carrying over 2,000 food ration packs to the impacted areas, including Tuvuca Village in the Lau Group. The Coalition Government is also engaging with development partners to evaluate further support needs, recognizing the importance of addressing climate change within disaster response strategies.
This proactive approach to disaster management is reflected in legislation such as the National Disaster Risk Management Act passed last year, aimed at ensuring sustainable development strategies are implemented with a focus on disaster risk reduction.
Overall, Minister Ditoka’s statements and actions highlight a commitment to community recovery and the implementation of long-term solutions, providing hope that the government will prioritize the needs of those affected while building resilience against future disasters. It is hoped that through these efforts, communities will not only recover but also emerge stronger and more unified in the face of adversity.
