Fiji’s sole track athlete at the 2023 Olympic Games, Waisake Tewa, has hinted at a potential delay in his return to athletics as he excels on the rugby field during the 2025 McDonald’s Coral Coast Sevens. Tewa, who previously attended Nakasi High School, has emerged as a key player for the Dominion Brothers team, impressing onlookers with his speed and relentless effort as they advance through the tournament.

Shifting his focus toward rugby for the time being, Tewa acknowledged the time he has spent away from the track. “It’s been a while since I’ve last stepped foot on the track. I’ve just been playing rugby for Dominion Brothers. My athletic coaches have contacted me to return, and I’ve told them I will after this Coral Coast tournament. You know, rugby has always been a dream,” he shared.

As excitement mounts regarding a possible selection for the national men’s sevens extended squad, Tewa expressed a willingness to prioritize rugby should that opportunity arise. “Yes, I will,” he confirmed when asked if he would further postpone his athletics career. “I’ve reached the pinnacle in my athletic career, making it to the Olympic Games.”

The Coral Coast Sevens continues at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, and fans can catch the action live on FBC Sports. Tewa’s journey reflects a growing trend among athletes who explore diverse sports opportunities, highlighting not only their multifaceted talents but also their dedication to pursuing their passions. With the support of his community and the potential chance to shine in rugby, Tewa’s future looks promising.
