The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is hosting an off-season athletics training camp designed to provide young athletes from smaller schools with the necessary skills and training during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou initiated this camp in response to the challenges he observed, where many talented students experienced injuries and exhaustion during competitions due to a lack of proper training and preparation.
Tafao’ou shared his concerns, noting that it’s disheartening to see students struggle or faint during events because they are not fit. This prompted him to propose the off-season program, which costs $20 per week, attracting around 35 participants since its launch three weeks prior to Christmas. The camp is structured to run for six weeks and will conclude on January 24, just before the inter-house competitions scheduled for February.
Students are receiving expert coaching from former athletes, including distinguished figures like Olympic champion Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro, who are mentoring them in high jump and sprinting techniques. The program focuses on teaching essential athletic skills, such as block starts and endurance training, with the goal of preparing students for future competitions.
Parents have expressed their gratitude, noticing positive changes in their children’s behavior, discipline, and time management, as the rigorous training has encouraged them to adhere to a structured routine. Many young athletes who were previously intimidated by their more experienced peers now feel more confident and eager to participate in upcoming events.
Tafao’ou highlighted the importance of inclusivity in sports training, emphasizing that the initiative aims to level the playing field for all athletes, regardless of their backgrounds. By investing in the talent present in less affluent schools, the FSC hopes to cultivate a new generation of athletes who can thrive in the competitive landscape of athletics.
As the camp progresses, it not only fosters essential skills and physical fitness but also builds a community and sense of belonging among participants. This dedicated initiative represents a step forward in enhancing the athletics scene in Fiji, inspiring young athletes to chase their dreams and nurture their potential. With continued support, this training camp could yield positive outcomes for not just the individuals involved, but for the future of sports in Fiji.
