The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has initiated its off-season athletics training camp to support young athletes, particularly those from smaller schools, by providing them with a structured training environment during the school holidays. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou expressed concern for these athletes, noting that many possess significant talent but lack proper training, leading to incidents of injury or exhaustion during competitions.
In an effort to address this issue, Tafao’ou proposed the off-season camp to FSC management, which was subsequently approved. The program, which has a nominal fee of $20 per week, has seen encouraging participation with around 35 students engaging in the first weeks leading up to Christmas. The initiative not only focuses on improving physical fitness but also aims to teach crucial athletic skills, such as block starts and endurance training, over a six-week period, concluding on January 24.
Notable former athletes, including Albert Miler and Banuve Tabakaucoro, are involved as coaches, specializing in sprints and jumps respectively, to enhance the training experience. Tafao’ou emphasized the importance of instilling discipline and teaching vital time management, noting the positive feedback from parents who have observed their children becoming more structured in their routines.
He highlighted that many young participants are initially intimidated by established competitors but are now becoming more eager to engage in inter-house competitions as a result of the supportive atmosphere fostered by the camp. The FSC training program aims to cultivate a new generation of athletes and ensure that less privileged students gain access to quality coaching that can boost their confidence and skills.
With the inter-house events scheduled for February, Tafao’ou encourages more young athletes to join the camp, as there are still a few weeks left to refine their abilities. The initiative not only prepares athletes for upcoming competitions but also aims to inspire a passion for sports that can lead to long-term success on both national and international stages.
In summary, the FSC off-season training camp represents a significant opportunity for aspiring athletes in Fiji, focusing on inclusivity, skill development, and discipline. As these young talents commit to their training, the future looks promising for athletics in the region, paving the way for enhanced performance at various competitive levels.
