Fiji’s Off-Season Camp: A Game-Changer for Young Athletes

The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has established an off-season athletics training camp aimed specifically at young athletes from smaller or underprivileged schools, providing them with valuable training opportunities during the school holidays. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou initiated this program out of concern for the talented athletes who often face inadequate training, which can lead to injuries and underperformance in competitions.

Tafao’ou observed distressing incidents at previous athletics events where students struggled due to lack of preparedness, prompting him to propose a structured training camp to the FSC management, which was then approved. The camp, running for six weeks and charging a nominal fee of $20 per week, began three weeks prior to Christmas and will conclude on January 24, right before the inter-house competitions set for February.

The training program includes around 35 participants, coached by experienced former athletes, including Olympian Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro. They focus on teaching essential skills such as block starts, endurance training, and discipline, which have led to positive feedback from parents noting improved time management and behavior in their children.

Many participants, previously intimidated by their more experienced peers, are now eager to compete in the upcoming inter-house events—representing a significant boost to their confidence and skills. Tafao’ou emphasizes the camp’s commitment to inclusivity, affirming the belief that every athlete, regardless of their background, should have access to quality training.

As the program progresses and concludes soon, Tafao’ou invites more young athletes to join, expressing optimism about the camp’s potential to shape a new generation of skilled athletes in Fiji. This training camp not only aims to enhance participants’ athletic abilities but also fosters a supportive community, ultimately paving the way for future success in athletics on both national and international stages.

In summary, the FSC off-season athletics training camp is a beacon of hope for young talents in Fiji—a chance to cultivate skills, discipline, and a passion for sports. This initiative reflects the importance of nurturing talent and providing opportunities that empower young athletes to strive for excellence.
