Fiji’s Off-Season Athletics Camp: A Game Changer for Young Talents!

The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has launched an off-season athletics training camp that serves as a crucial platform for young athletes, particularly those from smaller schools, to gain training experience during the holidays. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou highlighted the program’s importance, noting that many talented students often lack structured training, which can lead to injuries and performance issues during competitions.

Concerned by incidents he witnessed at various athletic events where athletes fainted due to poor fitness, Tafao’ou proposed the camp to help these students enhance their skills and fitness levels. The initiative was approved by FSC management and charges a nominal fee of $20 per week. Since its inception just before Christmas, the camp has attracted about 35 participants and is scheduled to run for six weeks, concluding on January 24—right before the inter-house competitions in February.

Participants receive specialized coaching from experienced former athletes, including Olympic champion Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro, who focus on critical skills such as block starts and endurance techniques. Beyond athletic training, the program emphasizes the development of discipline and time management, which has led to positive improvements in participants’ routines that parents have observed.

Tafao’ou aims to create an inclusive atmosphere where all young athletes, regardless of their backgrounds, can train together. Many who were initially intimidated by more experienced competitors are now eager to participate in upcoming inter-house events, all thanks to the supportive environment fostered by the camp.

As the training program continues, Tafao’ou encourages more young athletes to join, highlighting that there is still time to benefit from the training before the competitions begin. This initiative not only prepares athletes for imminent contests but also seeks to inspire a passion for sports, laying the groundwork for their long-term success.

In summary, the FSC’s off-season athletics training camp represents a significant opportunity for young athletes in Fiji, focusing on skill development, discipline, and community support. With these dedicated young athletes continuously improving their skills, the future of athletics in the region looks promising, paving the way for enhanced performance at various competitive levels.
