The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is actively hosting an off-season athletics training camp aimed at providing young athletes from smaller schools with essential training opportunities during the holiday season. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou initiated this program after observing a concerning trend: many talented athletes struggled during competitions due to inadequate fitness, leading to incidents of injury or even fainting.
In response to these observations, Tafao’ou proposed the establishment of a structured training camp, which has been well-received, attracting around 35 participants since its launch weeks before Christmas. The camp operates for a total of six weeks and charges a nominal fee of $20 per week. It is set to conclude on January 24, just in time for the inter-house competitions scheduled for February.
Under the guidance of experienced former athletes, such as Olympian Albert Miler and sprinting talent Banuve Tabakaucoro, the participants are being trained in foundational athletic skills including block starts and endurance techniques. Tafao’ou underscores the importance of not only enhancing athletic capabilities but also instilling essential life skills like discipline and time management. Many parents have reported positive changes in their children’s behavior and routines, observing increased enthusiasm towards the upcoming competitions.
Additionally, Tafao’ou aims to create an inclusive environment where all athletes, regardless of their school’s resources, can train and develop their skills. This initiative has especially helped those who may have been intimidated by competing against more established peers. The supportive atmosphere of the camp has led many previously hesitant young athletes to eagerly anticipate their upcoming inter-house events.
As the camp continues, Tafao’ou encourages more young athletes to join, emphasizing there’s still time to gain valuable experience before the competitions commence. The FSC off-season training camp represents a significant commitment to nurturing talent in Fiji, promoting inclusivity, discipline, and a love for the sport. This program not only prepares participants for immediate challenges but also inspires a passion that could lead to future success at both national and international levels.
In summary, the FSC’s initiative serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes, enhancing their skills and fostering a community spirit that paves the way for a brighter future in Fijian athletics. As young talents engage actively in their training, the potential for achievements in sports becomes increasingly promising.
