The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) has established an off-season athletics training camp that serves as a vital platform for young athletes, particularly those from smaller schools. This initiative, spearheaded by National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou, aims to provide structured training during the holiday season.
Recognizing the need for additional training among talented students who often experience injuries and exhaustion during competitions, Tafao’ou proposed the camp to FSC management. The initiative charges a nominal fee of $20 per week and has already attracted around 35 participants since its launch just before Christmas. The program is set to run for six weeks, culminating on January 24, just in time for the inter-house competitions scheduled for February.
The camp features experienced former athletes, including Olympic champion Albert Miler and sprinting star Banuve Tabakaucoro, who guide participants in foundational skills such as block starts, high jumps, and sprints. As they work through the training program, the young athletes not only improve their physical capabilities but also learn essential life skills like discipline and time management. Parents have expressed satisfaction, noting positive changes in their children’s routines as they adapt to an organized training schedule.
As the athletes progress, Tafao’ou observes an increase in confidence, with many participants who were initially intimidated by their more experienced peers now eager to compete in upcoming events. The training camp emphasizes inclusivity, allowing athletes from all backgrounds to benefit from high-quality coaching and training experiences.
Tafao’ou encourages additional young athletes to join the camp, emphasizing that there is still time to develop their skills before the inter-house competitions begin. By nurturing young talent and fostering a supportive environment, the FSC off-season athletics training camp represents a significant step towards enhancing the future of sports in Fiji.
In summary, this initiative not only aims to prepare participants for immediate competitions but also serves as an inspiring opportunity for young athletes to develop their skills in a community-focused environment. The enthusiasm shown by these dedicated athletes bodes well for the long-term success of athletics in Fiji, potentially paving the way for the emergence of new champions in the sport.
