Fiji’s Off-Season Athletics Camp: A Chance to Shine for Young Talent!

The Fiji Sports Council (FSC) is currently hosting an off-season athletics training camp aimed at providing young athletes from minor schools with essential training opportunities during their holidays. National athletics coach Ben Tafao’ou emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that many talented athletes often lack access to proper off-season training and suffer from poor fitness levels, which can lead to injuries during competitions.

Tafao’ou, who witnessed numerous instances of young athletes struggling during last year’s athletics events, advocated for this camp to help these students enhance their skills and fitness in preparation for upcoming competitions. The camp, which runs for six weeks and includes a modest fee of $20 per week, has already attracted a robust response with 35 participants leading up to Christmas.

Renowned former athletes, such as Olympic star Albert Miller and Pacific sprint sensation Banuve Tabakaucoro, are mentoring attendees in various disciplines, including high jumps, sprints, and long-distance running. Students learn crucial foundational skills like block starts and undergo a comprehensive training program tailored to their needs.

As the camp progresses, Tafao’ou expressed enthusiasm about the visible changes in the athletes, particularly their time management skills and increased discipline. This structured environment is not only benefiting physical training but also aiding in the development of life skills. Parents have also noted improvements in their children, with many eagerly anticipating the inter-house competitions set to begin in February.

Tafao’ou stressed the camp’s mission to level the playing field, offering opportunities to students who traditionally may not have competed against their peers from more established schools. With just over two weeks remaining until the program concludes on January 24, he encourages more young athletes to join and take advantage of the coaching and experiences available.

The initiative illustrates a commitment to fostering young talent in Fiji, with hopes of elevating the country’s athletics landscape. As the camp continues, it serves as a testament to the power of dedication, support, and inclusive training environments aimed at nurturing future champions.
