Fiji is actively pursuing the establishment of a team in the National Rugby League (NRL), as confirmed by Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports. The government is supportive of the initiative led by the proposing company, emphasizing their commitment through backing letters from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and other governmental assistance.

Saukuru highlighted that, unlike Papua New Guinea, which recently secured a license for an NRL team set to debut in 2028, Fiji has yet to seek financial aid from Australian counterparts. This suggests a strategic approach as Fiji works towards establishing its presence in the NRL.

In a separate matter, there has been no recent update from the commission of inquiry into the death of Ubayd Haider. Saukuru mentioned that the last communication indicated that the remaining six individuals overseas, including promoter Freddy Chand, were scheduled for interviews. A further update from the commission chairperson, Edwin Wainiqolo, is anticipated this week.

It is encouraging to see Fiji taking concrete steps towards joining the NRL, which could significantly enhance the nation’s representation in international rugby. This endeavor not only demonstrates Fiji’s commitment to the sport but also has the potential to bring increased visibility and opportunities for local talent on a larger stage.

Summary: Fiji is moving forward with its bid for an NRL team, backed by government support, while updates on an independent investigation into a significant incident are expected soon.
