Fiji’s aspirations to participate in the National Rugby League (NRL) are still progressing, according to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru. He confirmed that the government is doing all it can to support the organization behind this proposal.

Saukuru stated, “The NRL bid is still ongoing,” and emphasized their commitment to assist the rugby league initiative. This support includes letters of endorsement from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and the government itself.

Unlike Papua New Guinea, which recently secured a license to establish an NRL team in 2028, Fiji has not yet sought financial assistance from Australia. This significant development was celebrated during a meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Papua New Guinean Prime Minister James Marape in Sydney.

In a separate matter, there has been no recent update from the commission investigating the death of Ubayd Haider. Saukuru mentioned that the latest information indicated that six individuals abroad, including promoter Freddy Chand, were to be interviewed. An update from the inquiry is anticipated this week from chairperson Edwin Wainiqolo.

This article reflects Fiji’s commitment to advancing its rugby league ambitions while also ensuring transparency in ongoing investigations. The support of government officials showcases an encouraging momentum, indicating a dedicated effort towards realizing these goals.

Summary: Fiji is progressing with its NRL team bid, supported by government endorsements, while awaiting further updates on an investigation into Ubayd Haider’s death.
