Fiji’s NRL Dream: What’s Next for Rugby League Ambitions?

Fiji is making progress in its aspirations to establish a team in the National Rugby League (NRL), according to Jese Saukuru, the Minister for Youth and Sports. Saukuru reassured that the government is fully committed to supporting the efforts of the company responsible for the bid. He emphasized that they are coordinating with key government officials, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, to facilitate the bid.

Saukuru pointed out that unlike Papua New Guinea, which recently secured a license to join the NRL in 2028, Fiji has not yet sought financial assistance from Australian authorities. This highlights a strategic approach as Fiji navigates its way through the complex processes associated with its bid.

In a separate update, Saukuru noted there has been no recent information from the commission of inquiry looking into the death of Ubayd Haider. He provided reassurance that updates are expected soon from Edwin Wainiqolo, the chairperson of the inquiry, particularly regarding the interviews of overseas witnesses, including promoter Freddy Chand.

This ongoing commitment to rugby league and the government’s support for the bid signify Fiji’s enthusiasm for expanding its presence in the sport, which could have significant positive implications for its community and sporting culture.

In conclusion, as Fiji continues to pursue its NRL aspirations, there is hope for future developments that could bring more opportunities for local talent and further enhance the country’s reputation in the world of rugby league.
