The Ministry of Education has announced an extension of school closures in the Northern Division for an additional day, allowing communities time to recover from the severe rainfall and flash flooding that recently affected the region. Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro confirmed that schools in Vanua Levu and Taveuni will remain closed on Thursday, November 27, 2025, to enable families to clear debris, repair damaged properties, and restore access to roads and homes.
Schools are set to reopen on Friday, November 28, contingent upon favorable weather conditions and safety assessments. The latest Situation Report from the Ministry’s Emergency Operations Centre shows that while weather conditions have improved, many communities still face challenges in the aftermath of the flooding.
The report indicated the following key updates:
– Floodwaters are gradually receding throughout Vanua Levu and Taveuni.
– Power and water supply have been restored, and traffic is returning to normal in most areas.
– However, several roads and crossings remain damaged and inaccessible.
– Ongoing soil erosion and blocked drainage systems continue to pose safety risks.
In line with the recommendations from the Ministry’s Disaster Risk Reduction team, the extended closure aims to ensure the safe return of students and teachers. Heads of Schools have been reminded to assess local conditions independently on Friday and to take appropriate actions while keeping the Ministry informed.
On Viti Levu, schools will remain open; however, the Ministry encourages parents and guardians to exercise caution based on local weather conditions. School leaders on the main island have also been urged to prioritize safety when determining the viability of classes.
The Ministry of Education will collaborate closely with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO) and the Divisional Emergency Operations Centre to monitor the situation, pledging to provide further updates should weather conditions evolve.
Minister Radrodro emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of students and educators during adverse weather events, reaffirming that protecting these communities is the Ministry’s highest priority. This proactive approach reflects an encouraging effort to nurture resilience and adaptability in the face of natural challenges.
