The National Fire Authority (NFA) has officially introduced its inaugural emergency pre-hospital ambulance. The event was marked by an announcement from Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, who highlighted a significant government investment, which includes an additional allocation of $2.1 million for ambulance services in the upcoming 2024-2025 fiscal year.
Minister Nalumisa emphasized the advancements made since the National Ambulance Service Act was put into effect in 2010, providing a framework for the current services delivered by the NFA. Notably, he mentioned that ambulance calls have comprised 26 percent of all calls to the NFA in the last five financial years, positioning them just behind private fire alarm calls in volume.
“So far this year, we have responded to 170 fire emergencies and 152 road accidents,” Nalumisa stated. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the NFA, with a total of $6.1 million designated for its operations, which has facilitated the procurement of two new ambulances in the previous year, with more planned for the current fiscal period.
Minister Nalumisa concluded by expressing the government’s conviction that every community across Fiji deserves access to modern ambulance services, and detailed plans to ensure all personnel are thoroughly trained, well-equipped, and ready to deliver prompt emergency healthcare to every part of the nation.
This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing emergency services in Fiji, showcasing the government’s dedication to improving community health outcomes.
To further enhance community safety, it would be ideal for the NFA to implement regular training sessions for its staff and engage in community awareness programs about emergency response services. This proactive approach could cultivate stronger ties with the public and ensure timely access to emergency care when needed.
In summary, the NFA’s efforts reflect a hopeful future for emergency medical services in Fiji, reassuring the community of prompt and effective care during emergencies.
