The National Fire Authority (NFA) of Fiji is taking significant steps towards the establishment of a national rescue center, which aims to enhance the country’s response to major accidents and disasters. Manager of Fire Safety and Compliance, Joel Israel, emphasized the need for the NFA to be officially recognized as Fiji’s primary first responder, rather than merely being called upon in the aftermath of incidents.

According to Israel, the NFA is currently addressing a diverse range of emergencies that extend beyond traditional fire incidents. To bolster its effectiveness, the NFA is advocating for a coordinated approach that involves collaboration with various agencies, including the Police, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, and the Fiji Corrections Service.

The plans for the new NFA headquarters are advancing, with the proposal for a dedicated floor that will house the national rescue and emergency response center. Israel highlighted the importance of government support in facilitating the financing for this initiative, as the NFA seeks not only a financial model but also a commitment from the government to assist in its implementation.

Furthermore, the NFA has successfully secured land for the center, which has been a long-term objective. With architects already engaged in the project, the development talks are progressing well. The proposed centralized rescue and emergency coordination center is expected to alleviate pressures on the existing disaster management systems, ultimately enhancing the nation’s preparedness and response capabilities.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach to disaster management in Fiji, signaling a hopeful advancement in ensuring the safety and resilience of communities across the nation.
