Fiji’s Next Police Chief: Who Will Take the Helm?

The Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) is scheduled to convene on Monday to deliberate on the appointment of Fiji’s new Police Commissioner. Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition, expressed optimism about the upcoming discussions, noting the importance of addressing several critical matters, particularly the selection of the new Commissioner of Police (COMPOL).

Mr. Seruiratu highlighted that the meeting will also cover the appointment of a new chairperson for the Electoral Commission, indicating the wide-ranging impact of the discussion. An independent panel has been tasked with reviewing 29 applications for the COMPOL position, ensuring a thorough vetting process.

COC chair and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka assured that the selection process for the new COMPOL would adhere to due diligence. He confirmed that various applications will be presented to the commission during the meeting.

Among the notable candidates expressing interest for the role are former Assistant Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and UN assistant secretary general Unaisi Vuniwaqa. The active involvement of these high-ranking officials suggests a strong pool of candidates that could enhance the future of Fiji’s policing.
