The vibrant music scene of Fiji continues to thrive, showcasing the immense talent present in the community. The recently held 2024 Reggae Music Festival at Bidesi Ground illustrated this beautifully as a dynamic group of young performers, Chapter 5 (C5), captivated audiences with their reggae sounds. The band, which comprises cousins and siblings, includes Nicholas Smith on drums, Michael Yalani on lead guitar, Niko Yalani on rhythm guitar, Filipe Yalani on bass, and vocalists Maya and Niu Smith.
Chapter 5 draws their name from a rich family legacy in music, being the fifth generation of musicians stemming from Wallis and Futuna. Nicholas shared insights into their lineage, highlighting contributions from the earlier generations that have paved the way, including their late uncle Arthur Philitoga, a notable figure in the Fijian music industry. Philitoga was known for his forthright nature and his ability to cultivate talent, leaving a commendable legacy that influences and inspires C5.
The road has not always been easy for the band, as they navigate the pressures of living up to a well-known family name. However, they embrace this challenge as motivation to carve out their own identity in the music landscape. The band receives frequent gig invitations and performs regularly at venues like Mana Coffee in Suva, indicating a promising start to their musical journey.
Despite the challenges they face, the camaraderie among family members strengthens their resolve. They draw inspiration from various local artists, including their eldest brother Sebastian Yalani, and leverage family ties to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts. Their musical adventure began with a casual grog session, which ultimately led to their first gig thanks to a connection with established artist Olsen J Sefo.
C5 has shown remarkable growth in just over a year, with positive feedback from audiences demonstrating their potential for further success. Their journey highlights the importance of community and familial support in the arts, fostering an environment where creativity and talent can flourish.
With strong familial bonds and community backing, Chapter 5 stands on the brink of further achievements in the Fijian music scene, promising to carry on the legacy of their forebearers while cultivating their unique sound.
