Fiji’s Next Ambassador: Controversy Surrounds Appointment

Peter Wise, the former permanent secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, has been selected to become Fiji’s next Ambassador to Japan. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday.

Wise will take over the position from Filimone Waqabaca, who is slated to return to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank (FDB). Wise resigned from his post as permanent secretary on September 25, citing personal reasons. However, Prime Minister Rabuka later revealed that there had been a sexual harassment allegation against Wise, which was submitted to the Public Service Commission (PSC). Rabuka indicated that Wise was made aware of the issue before he chose to resign.

Wise held the position of permanent secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister starting in January 2023 and has held similar roles in prior governments.
