The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is issuing an urgent warning regarding unsafe road behaviors during the New Year celebrations, which have the potential to jeopardize lives as traffic volumes surge across the country. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that the festive season should be characterized by joy rather than preventable tragedies on the roads.

Rokosawa expressed deep concern about reckless conduct that often stems from festive celebrations, specifically calling attention to the dangerous practice of throwing water at moving vehicles. He highlighted that such actions distract drivers, obstruct visibility, and can result in a loss of control, leading to severe or even fatal accidents.

Motorists are urged to adhere strictly to speed limits and refrain from hazardous overtaking maneuvers. Rokosawa reiterated the importance of never driving under the influence, noting that both speeding and drink-driving remain leading contributors to serious incidents during this celebratory period.

It is crucial for drivers to stay vigilant and manage fatigue, particularly during nighttime driving or on lengthy journeys. Rokosawa emphasized that no celebration is worth the risk to lives. Passengers also bear a responsibility in ensuring road safety; they are reminded to wear seatbelts where available and to discourage reckless driving behaviors, voicing concerns if a driver acts dangerously.

Furthermore, excessive noise and unsafe movements inside vehicles are cautioned against, as these can divert drivers’ attention, especially amid heavy festive traffic. Pedestrians are equally reminded to practice vigilance during celebrations, especially when near roads. Rokosawa advised them to utilize designated crossings, remain visible in low light, and avoid alcohol consumption when walking near traffic.

Parents and guardians are implored to keep a close watch on children, teaching them about safe behaviors around roadways and reinforcing that roads are unsuitable places for play. Public Service Vehicle drivers are expected to demonstrate care and professionalism in their operations.

Rokosawa called upon all road users to exhibit patience and courtesy, acknowledging that while traffic congestion is typical during the holiday period, aggressive driving only heightens the risk of accidents. The LTA, in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, will continue its joint enforcement initiatives, which involve roadside checks, vehicle inspections, license verification, increased patrols, and speed monitoring in areas identified as high-risk.

Through these efforts, the LTA aims to foster a safer environment for all road users during the New Year celebrations, underscoring the importance of responsible behavior for a joyous and accident-free festive period.
