As New Year celebrations draw near, law enforcement has reported significant traffic violations, documenting 256 speeding offenses and making 23 arrests for drunk driving over the course of just 48 hours. This surge in infractions occurred during the weekend, specifically on Saturday and Sunday, as families engaged in holiday travel and year-end gatherings.
An alarming 19 of the 23 arrests for drunk driving were made in the capital, Suva, while police conducted 171 random breath tests across the nation. Additionally, four drivers were apprehended in Nadi for operating vehicles under the influence. In total, officers reported 14 drunk driving arrests nationwide alongside the considerable count of speeding infringements.
The police highlighted the concerning trend, noting that speeding and drunk driving are primary contributors to road fatalities in Fiji. With traffic volumes escalating on major highways and in urban centers, law enforcement officials are ramping up their presence, especially in areas known for high traffic and frequent accidents.
Authorities are encouraging drivers to exercise caution by slowing down, avoiding alcohol consumption before driving, and carefully planning their journeys. They emphasize that reckless behavior on the road can lead to tragic outcomes during this festive season. It is a critical reminder for all motorists to prioritize safety as they celebrate the New Year.
