The NaVualiku initiative, also referred to as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu’, celebrated the inauguration of its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday.

The office, situated at JKS Building, was officially opened by Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, who oversees the programme.

Mr. Gavoka emphasized that the establishment of this office signifies more than merely a new facility; it represents a commitment to the local community where the project aims to create a positive impact, develop strategies, mobilize resources, and establish a foundation for sustainable development. He noted that the ministry aims not only to attract more tourists to Vanua Levu but also to enhance the quality of life for its residents.

“The office will be crucial in ensuring that the NaVualiku programme’s benefits extend to every community on this island,” he added.

In a related announcement, World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, highlighted that the project is backed by a US$200 million funding commitment from the World Bank. This initiative will be executed in three phases over the next ten years as part of a comprehensive programmatic strategy.

Mr. Mocci assured that the World Bank, along with key partners and stakeholders, is dedicated to aiding the Government of Fiji in its mission to transform Vanua Levu into a prosperous tourism destination that generates jobs, particularly for women and youth, attracts both local and foreign investments, and contributes to economic growth. This initiative is designed to elevate the living standards of the people in Vanua Levu.

He remarked, “In addition to funding, we are offering our global and regional expertise, experience, and knowledge as a part of our commitment to facilitating the successful execution of this project.”

The new office is seen as a vital element in the ongoing efforts to enhance outcomes on the ground and to improve coordination and collaboration, ultimately fostering stronger partnerships in the northern region of Fiji. Mr. Mocci expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development goals under its ‘Look North’ policy aimed at strengthening the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
