The NaVualiku initiative, also referred to as the “Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,” officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. The event took place at the JKS Building and was inaugurated by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, under whose ministry the program operates.

Minister Gavoka emphasized that the new office represents more than just a physical space; it signifies a commitment to making a tangible impact in the region. He stated that the objective of the ministry extends beyond attracting more tourists to Vanua Levu; it aims to enhance the lives of local residents.

“This office will play a crucial role in ensuring the benefits of the NaVualiku program reach every community on this island,” he added.

The initiative is backed by a significant investment, with the World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, announcing a US$200 million financing package for the project. The implementation will occur in three phases over the next decade, following a multi-phase programmatic approach.

Mocci highlighted the World Bank’s dedication, along with key partners and stakeholders, to assist the Fijian government in transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism center. This transformation is expected to create jobs, particularly for women and youth, attract both local and international investments, and drive economic growth, ultimately improving the quality of life for Fijians in the region.

He noted that the World Bank is contributing not only financial support but also global and regional expertise to help ensure the project’s success. The new office is viewed as an essential part of the efforts to achieve significant results on the ground while fostering collaboration and partnerships in the northern part of Fiji.

Mocci expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development priorities through the ‘Look North’ policy aimed at enhancing the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
