Fiji’s New Tourism Office: A Game Changer for Vanua Levu?

The NaVualiku initiative, also known as the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. Situated in the JKS Building, the event was inaugurated by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, as the programme falls under his ministry’s oversight.

Mr. Gavoka emphasized that the office symbolizes more than just a physical location. It is a significant step towards making a real impact, shaping strategies, mobilizing resources, and laying the groundwork for sustainable development in the region. He highlighted that the ministry aims not only to attract more tourists to Vanua Levu but also to enhance the lives of its residents. “The office will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme reach every community on this island,” he noted.

In a related development, Stefano Mocci, the World Bank Group’s country manager for Fiji, announced that the project has secured a US$200 million financing package from the World Bank. This project will be executed in three phases over the next decade, utilizing a multi-phase programmatic approach.

Mocci affirmed the World Bank’s commitment, along with key partners and stakeholders, to support the Fijian government’s initiatives aimed at transforming Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub. This transformation is expected to create job opportunities, particularly for women and youth, attract both local and international investments, and stimulate economic growth, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for Fijians in the area. He added that the World Bank would provide not only financial support but also its global and regional expertise to aid the project’s implementation.

Mocci remarked that the new office is a vital element for accelerating results on the ground, improving coordination, and fostering stronger partnerships in the Northern region. He expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development priorities under the ‘Look North’ policy, which aims to strengthen the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
