NaVualiku, the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. Located at the JKS Building, the opening ceremony was led by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, whose ministry oversees the program.
Minister Gavoka expressed that the office symbolizes more than just physical space; it represents an opportunity to impact the local community, shape strategies, mobilize resources, and foster sustainable development. He emphasized that the goal is not only to attract more tourists to Vanua Levu but also to enhance the quality of life for the local residents.
“This office will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku program extend to every community on this island,” he noted.
The initiative is backed by the World Bank Group, with its country manager for Fiji, Stefano Mocci, highlighting a US$200 million financial commitment to the project. The plan involves a multi-phase implementation over the next decade.
Mocci stated that the World Bank and its partners are dedicated to assisting the Fijian government’s efforts to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism hub, aiming to create job opportunities, particularly for women and youth, attract both local and international investments, and stimulate economic growth, thereby improving the quality of life for residents.
In addition to providing financing, the World Bank will contribute its global expertise and knowledge to support the project’s implementation. Mocci added that the new office will play a vital role in accelerating local results, enhancing coordination, and fostering partnerships in the northern region.
He expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development goals under the ‘Look North’ policy, aimed at strengthening the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
