The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation in Fiji has joined forces with the United Nations Development Program Pacific Office to bolster the resilience of the tourism sector. This new partnership aims to manage the growth of tourism while ensuring environmental sustainability and disaster risk mitigation.

The collaboration emphasizes the need for tourism development that yields fair benefits for local communities and safeguards Fiji’s rich cultural heritage. Among the key initiatives are the establishment of two government roles focused on capacity building, enhancing community-based tourism, and the implementation of Fiji’s National Sustainable Tourism Framework for 2024-2034, which prioritizes risk-informed planning strategies.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka underscored the importance of this partnership during a recent statement. Gavoka highlighted the necessity of integrating resilience into governance structures, noting that such measures not only protect livelihoods but also ensure that natural and cultural treasures are preserved for future generations. He reiterated that the tourism sector is a significant economic driver and an avenue for cultural exchange.

Permanent Secretary Salaseini Daunabuna further emphasized the critical role of tourism in economic growth and the importance of building governance systems that incorporate risk-informed decision-making for long-term sustainability.

Representatives from the UNDP Pacific Office echoed these sentiments, indicating that tourism has the potential to drive sustainable development, alleviate poverty, and promote cultural heritage.

This proactive step taken by the Fijian government reflects a broader commitment to standards for sustainable tourism that aligns with international trends towards responsible travel practices. Such initiatives not only provide hope for the tourism sector’s future resilience but also serve as a model that other nations can adopt in facing similar challenges.

The collaboration illustrates a significant move towards sustainable practices that can shape a thriving future for Fiji’s tourism landscape.
