The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, has launched a Tax Compliance Taskforce aimed at combating tax evasion and improving compliance across the nation. The taskforce, chaired by esteemed Chartered Accountant Nitin Gandhi, seeks to enhance revenue collection through effective enforcement measures and collaboration with relevant organizations and businesses.
The key objectives of the Tax Compliance Taskforce include:
– Reviewing and suggesting enhancements to existing tax legislation and processes.
– Redesigning frameworks for investigating non-compliance and undisclosed income.
– Working closely with key agencies to tackle tax evasion and financial crimes.
– Leveraging evidence-based research and data from various sources to support investigations.
– Implementing strategies to protect revenue while ensuring adherence to legal standards.
– Upholding strict protocols for data privacy and security.
In addition to Gandhi, notable members of the Taskforce consist of former FRCS CEO Jitoko Tikolevu, ex-acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, governance expert Avaneesh Anand Raman, and financial management specialist Pramesh Sharma. The Taskforce has been formed for an initial 12-month period, and it aims to ensure accurate tax collection in alignment with FRCS processes.
Udit Singh, the CEO of FRCS, noted that the organization has comprehensive baseline information regarding individual income. He emphasized that the Taskforce will work collaboratively with the existing framework of the Commissioner of Tax under the FRCS Act, along with other crucial entities such as the Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit (FFIU), the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), the Fiji Police Force, and the Director of Public Prosecutions Office (DPP). Additionally, the Taskforce will cooperate with international partners, including agencies from Australia and New Zealand.
A structured operational framework for the Taskforce is being developed, which will include a memorandum of understanding with other enforcement agencies in the coming months.
This initiative represents a significant step towards strengthening tax governance in Fiji, contributing to a fairer and more compliant revenue system. The collaborative approach with local and international partners fosters a shared commitment to transparency and efficiency, promising a stronger financial future for Fiji.
