The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has reiterated its strong commitment to assist the Fiji Police Force in combating illicit drug trafficking during a high-level meeting held last Friday at the RFMF Headquarters in Suva. The meeting was attended by RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai and Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu, where they discussed strategies to tackle the serious threat posed by drug-related crimes in Fiji.
A key outcome of the meeting was the establishment of a collaborative joint operations task force aimed at identifying, disrupting, and dismantling drug trafficking activities in high-risk areas across the nation. Major-General Kalouniwai emphasized the army’s unwavering support for the police in safeguarding national security and public safety, highlighting their readiness to work together to address the ongoing drug crisis.
Commissioner Tudravu underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in effectively combating the illicit drug trade, which has increasingly threatened communities in Fiji. The newly formed task force reflects a concerted effort to launch targeted operations, aiming not only to enhance law enforcement responses but also to engage communities in addressing the root causes of drug abuse.
Past discussions have noted that Fiji’s drug issues are often intertwined with broader societal challenges, including poverty, limited healthcare, and education disparities. Therefore, the task force will also explore community engagement strategies to foster cooperation with local residents and provide support systems aimed at curbing drug misuse.
As operations commence, both the military and police remain optimistic about the potential for these collaborative efforts to lead to safer communities. This approach symbolizes a unified front against drug-related threats, ultimately fostering a healthier and more secure society for all Fijians.
Authorities express hope that the initiative will not only tackle the immediate crisis but also create long-term strategies focused on prevention and rehabilitation, thereby nurturing a thriving community atmosphere free from the clutches of drug abuse.
