Fiji’s New Tabua Export Rules: What You Need to Know!

Starting January 2025, Fiji will enforce new regulations limiting the export of tabua, or whale teeth, to just sixteen pieces per month. This initiative is part of the government’s effort to protect cultural artifacts and marine life. The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, is set to enhance the regulatory framework governing the import and export of tabua.

To take tabua out of Fiji or import it, individuals will need to obtain an approval letter from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, followed by an export or import permit from the Ministry of Environment. The authorities emphasized that without these permits, export or import will not be permitted. The monthly quota will be strictly enforced, and individuals are encouraged to apply early for the necessary approvals, as requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Though there is no limit on the import of tabua, all regulatory requirements must be met, including obtaining permits from the originating country as well as an import permit from Fiji’s Ministry of Environment. It is important to note that tabua export and import is prohibited in the United States, and the Ministry will not issue approval letters for those cases.

This initiative reflects a growing awareness and commitment to cultural preservation and sustainable practices within Fiji. By regulating tabua exports, the government aims to protect both its cultural heritage and the marine ecosystems from which these artifacts are derived.

In summary, Fiji is taking significant steps to preserve its unique cultural heritage and ensure sustainable practices regarding the export and import of tabua starting in 2025. This is a hopeful move toward cultural and environmental stewardship.
